If you have a question which is not answered below, please email it to us at info@sjsup.com.

i've never sup'd before, can I rent a board and learn on my own?

We require you to take a lesson with us before you are able to rent our equipment and paddle on your own. This is for our safety and yours when you are alone on the water. Our lesson will teach you the fundamentals of stand up paddleboarding, and it will be a great experience to learn from our instructors with years of stand up paddleboarding instruction under their belt. Stand up paddleboarding is not a difficult sport to pick up, however, you will be able to progress faster, easier, and safer if you learn from us.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO LEARN during your lesson?

Our lesson starts with a brief on land instruction explaining the equipment we will be using. We will detail what to look for in a board for what you want to get out of it, explain how the different dimensions of the board affect your ride, and fit you with a properly sized paddle. We will teach you the fundamentals of paddling, balancing on the board, and water safety before heading out onto the water. We instruct you on how to be safe while on the water by teaching you how to read the water around you. Once we are on the water and comfortable, we will be going in the water! This allows us to teach you how to get back on the board, and it is a requirement during our lesson.

do i really have to fall in the water?

Yes, you really do. Do not come to the lesson unprepared to get wet. It is a mandatory requirement to do so during our lesson if you want to rent our equipment for your own use. By falling off the board, we are able to teach you how to get back onto the board. You will instantly feel more comfortable once standing on the board again. If you want, we can document the fall too, it makes for a great kodak moment.

How long is your beginner lesson?

Our lesson is 1 hour long, including our on land introduction.

Is the board rental included in the lesson cost?

Yes it is. The price of our lesson includes all the equipment we will be using: board, paddle, life vest, and leash.

How can I sign up for a lesson?

Click on 'Book With Us' at the top of the page to see our online reservation system. Once there, simply choose a category on the left and a list of our related services will open. Click 'Info' for important information about our services. Click 'Book' to see pricing, availability, and to book a reservation.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes, you can cancel your reservation but we do not provide a refund for cancellations. Please be sure you are going to commit to your lesson, rental, paddle party, or other service before booking with us.

Can I reschedule my reservation?

Yes, you can reschedule your reservation up to 3 days in advance. If you see that one day will have much nicer weather and there is availability in our schedule, it is suggested that you reschedule to a nicer day.

What if it rains?

If inclement weather should cause our lesson to be cancelled, you will receive a credit for a lesson which will last until the season is over. We will not be on the water if there is thunder, lightning, or high winds. Light rain is not a cause for our lesson to be cancelled, so be sure to check the weather when you are deciding when to take your lesson in order to make sure you pick the best day. No shows or cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will not receive a credit for another lesson.

How young or old can i be to take a lesson?

Kids 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kids under 10 will be best suited riding on their parent or guardian's board. Stand Up Paddleboarding is a simple and easy to pick up sport, however it also a physical workout. You will be on the water balancing on your board, paddling and in the sun for close to an hour during our lesson. If you do not feel comfortable being on the water and in the sun performing light exercise for an hour, it is best that you refrain from scheduling a lesson. Our stand up paddleboards also have a weight limit of 270 pounds. Please contact us at info@sjsup.com so we may be able to address your specific concerns about our lesson.

Do I need to wear a life jacket?

If you are 12 years old or younger, it is a coast guard requirement that you wear a personal flotation device (life jacket) while on a Stand Up Paddleboard. If you are over the age of 12, then you are only required that the life jacket be on your board. This for your and our safety.
